Goolgle mail filter wild card search

It was originally a netscape account, so sue me AOL bought them out a long time ago, but I like the netscape. Very handy when looking up airline reservations, for example, I just search for "southw" and get all my emails from southwest. And then there's no column sort or filter available either.

I'm kinda regretting using GMail as my main email account becuase of this as well. I may wind up either geting a cloud based Exchange account, or just setting up my own server again. Filters are pretty awesome. I just wish there was a way to do more with them. That sounds plausible. If only I'd thought to google how to use gmail. I guess you can exclude labels too.

If your documents are not returned effectively by google search, change your documents. Google knows best, you will adapt. Small business? Google search appliance. Large business? Medical industry? Google is good at fast retrieval and popularity based ranking. It's great if you're doing retrieval and you just want to locate a doc. That's their sense of the word 'find' It's not as great if you don't know what your solution looks like, only your problem. It doesn't do domain specific search, and it's tuned primarily through use, which assumes your users know WTF they're trying to find.

If you have billions of searches running through it, sure, that crowd sourced statistical behavior can be very effective. If it's just you, on your computer, or in a smaller environment, it's hard to build up that statistical inference. That inference also means that people have a vested interest in gaming your system, so you have to design your search in an antagonistic fashion.
